Popcorn corn from our crops

Popcorn corn is a variety of corn that, when heated, pops and turns into a light, fluffy snack. It is a popular food around the world, consumed as an aperitif, snack or dessert.

Popcorn corn is characterized by oval-shaped kernels and variable sizes, depending on the variety. The grains are covered by a pericarp, which is the outer part of the seed. Inside the seed is the endosperm, which is mainly composed of starch.

When popcorn kernels are heated, the water in the endosperm begins to evaporate. The pressure of the water vapor increases, and when it reaches a certain level, the pericarp ruptures and the seed explodes.

The endosperm, which has been previously heated and moistened, swells and turns into a light, fluffy flake. The pericarp, however, comes off and remains on the bottom of the pan.

Popcorn corn can be eaten plain or seasoned with salt, butter, sugar or other ingredients. It is a versatile food that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Varieties of popcorn corn

There are different varieties of popcorn corn, which differ in the color of the grains, the size and the flavor.

The most common variety is yellow corn, which has light yellow kernels and a mild flavor. Other varieties of popcorn corn are:

  • Red corn: The kernels are deep red in color and have a lightly toasted flavor.
  • Blue corn: The kernels are blue in color and have a sweet, delicate flavor.
  • White corn: The kernels are white in color and have a neutral flavor.

How to prepare popcorn

Popcorn can be prepared in several ways, using a pan, a popcorn maker or a microwave oven.

Preparation in the pan

To prepare popcorn in a pan, pour the corn kernels into a non-stick pan and add a spoonful of oil. Heat the pan over medium-high heat and cover with a lid.

When the kernels begin to pop, lower the heat and continue cooking for about 2 minutes, or until all the kernels have popped.

Preparing popcorn in the car

To make popcorn in your popcorn machine, you pour the kernels into the machine and turn it on.

The machine will cook the beans and pop them automatically.

Preparation in microwave oven

To prepare popcorn in the microwave, you pour the kernels into a microwave-safe bowl and cover with a plate.

Heat the popcorn in the microwave at maximum power for about 2 minutes, or until all the kernels have popped.

Be careful not to overcook the popcorn, otherwise it will become bitter.
